| Hemicycle- A semicircular
interior space or structure. Henge- A circular area enclosed by stones or wood posts set up by Neolithic peoples. It is usually bounded by a ditch and raised embankment. Herm- A statue that has the head and torso of a human but the lower part of which is a plain, tapering pillar of rectangular shape. Hieratic- In paintings and sculpture a formalized style for representing rulers or sacred or priestly figures. The hieratic scale is the use of different sizes for significant or holy figures and those of the everyday world to indicate importance. The larger the image the greater the importance. Hieroglyphs- Picture writing: words and ideas rendered in the form of pictorial symbols. High relief- Relief sculpture in which the image projects strongly from the background. Historiated- Bearing images or a narrative, as an historiated capital or initial. Horizon Line- A horizontal line formed by the implied meeting point of earth and sky. In linear perspective, the vanishing point or points are located on this line. Hue- pure color. The saturation or intensity of the hue depends on the purity of the color. It's value depends on it's lightness or darkness. Icon- An image in any material representing a sacred figure or event in the Byzantine, and later the Orthodox church. Icons were venerated by the faithful, who believed them to have miraculous powers to transmit messages to God. Iconography- The study of the significance and interpretation of the subject matter of art. Idealization- A process in art through which artists strive to make their forms and figures attain perfection, based on pervading cultural values and/or their own metal image of beauty. Ideograph- A written character or symbol representing an idea or object. Many Chinese characters are ideographs. Illumination- A painting on paper or parchment used as illustration or decoration for manuscripts or albums. Usually done in rich colors, often supplemented by gold and other precious materials. The illustrators are referred to as illuminators. Also the technique of decorating manuscripts with such paintings. Thomas Kinkade started his career as an illuminator. Illusionism- An appearance of vivid reality in art created by the use of certain pictorial means, such as linear detail and accurate perspective. Art having this quality is described as illusionistic. Op artist M.C. Escher has a gift for illusionism. Impasto- Thick application of pigment that gives a painting a palpable surface texture. Impression- Any single printing of a print. Every impression is by nature different, given the possibility for variation inherent in the printing process, which requires the plate to be inked and wiped between every impression. Ink painting- A monochromatic style of painting developed in china using black ink with gray washes. Inlay- To set pieces of a material or materials into a surface to form a design. Also material used in decoration formed by this technique. Installation art- Artworks created for a specific site, especially a gallery or outdoor area, that create a total environment. Frank Stella has created numerous pieces of installation art Intarsia- Decoration formed through wood inlay. |
